Double Celebration for the National Golf Club Challenge

Posted on 11th January, 2010

The National Golf Club Challenge team have recently had cause for a double celebration; firstly, for reaching a milestone of 150 golf clubs to register for the Challenge – and secondly, the news that the 150th club to sign up was the world renowned Carnoustie Golf Club.

Considered by many to be the most difficult course in the Open rota, Carnoustie is an instantly recognisable name in the world of golf. The Championship Course has been the scene of some of the most dramatic Open Competition conclusions. Including Jean Van de Velde's triple-bogey seven in 1999 which led to a three way play off, won by Paul Lawrie.

The Carnoustie Golf Club is also celebrated for its rich history and great tradition of golfing excellence. As illustrated from the their website:

"Between the late 1800s and early 1900s, it is estimated that around 300 of our members left Carnoustie and travelled extensively throughout the world to play and teach the great game. Indeed, our members were instrumental in creating the United States P.G.A. and the Australian P.G.A."

Stacey Jeffries, the National Golf Club Challenge Event Director commented “We are thrilled to have the world famous Carnoustie Golf Club participate in the Challenge competition."

"The Challenge is growing fast." Stacey continued, "It wasn't that long ago we passed 100 clubs. To reach 150 golf clubs in such a short period shows the generosity of the British golfing community as they come together to help raise funds for our wounded armed forces. A generosity typified by clubs like Carnoustie."

The format for the National Golf Club Challenge is very simple; the Challenge will coincide with each participating golf club's monthly stableford event, with each club turning the day into their own charity golf event, raising much needed funds for Help for Heroes.

The competing clubs will submit their aggregate scores from their best scoring 10 players. This will determine the top 6 golf clubs against standard scratch, who will then be invited to compete in the National Final.

The Grand Final, sponsored by YourGolfTravel.com, will be the conclusion of the 2010 National Golf Club Challenge. The two day event – hosted by The Belfry, one of the world's leading golf resorts, and four times host to the Ryder Cup – will be a superb grand final, featuring a practice day, golf clinic, overnight accommodation, the final competition and a gala dinner, including guest speakers and the prize presentations.
